Homemade dog treats (quick and healthy!)

Sharing a quick and easy homemade recipe for dog treats that your pup will love! All you have to do is make the dough, cut out in a shape of your choice, and bake.

Hi friends! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We’re back in the school grind this week and I started beta testing for nutrition coaching. I’ll be releasing more details about this next week, so stay tuned!

For today, let’s talk about dog treats. I know- kinda random for a fitness blog, but my top posts ever are about guinea pigs, baby food, and potty training, so here we are haha.

Also, Maisey loves these so much and insisted that I share the word for those of you with furry friends out there.

Homemade dog treats (quick and healthy!)

I made these dog treats on a whim, using some ingredients we always have on hand. I’ve started to give Maisey more bites of healthy human food, and let’s just say, she’s INTO IT. She loves plain chicken, egg, bell peppers, peanut butter, and watermelon. She’s also a huge fan of the bully sticks from Thrive Market. Sweet Caro even had her first bully stick ever, and even though she has like 4 teeth, she gummed it happily. She was also a huge fan of these homemade dog treats!

Ingredients for homemade dog treats:

Here are the ingredients to have on hand for these guys:

Peanut butter (make sure the only ingredients are peanuts and salt; no weird oils or sweeteners)

Pumpkin puree

Garbanzo bean flour (you could also use whole wheat flour)

Eggs

Instant oatmeal

and all-purpose flour for rolling the dough

and that’s it!!

You can always adjust the cooking time, depending on how crunchy you’d like them to be.

Here’s the quick and easy recipe!!

Homemade dog treats (quick and healthy!)

This is a quick treat recipe that your furry friend will love! I used garbanzo bean flour (they love chickpeas!) but feel free to use whole wheat instead.

  • Author: Gina Harney // The Fitnessista

Ingredients

1 cup garbanzo bean flour (can use whole wheat instead)

3 eggs (reserve 1 for the egg wash)

1/4 cup pumpkin puree

1/2 cup peanut butter (check the ingredients for peanuts and salt only)

1/2 cup quick cooking oats

All-purpose flour for rolling

Cookie cutters of choice

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 325 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, combine two of the eggs, the peanut butter, pumpkin, garbanzo bean flour (or wheat flour), and oatmeal. Stir until a dough forms. Add more garbanzo bean flour or some all-purpose flour to the dough if needed.

Sprinkle some all-purpose flour onto a clean surface and add the dough. It will be kind of sticky, so use the flour to coat the outside of the dough as you roll it to about 1/2-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut shapes and place them gently onto the baking sheet.

Combine the remaining dough, roll, and repeat.

Make the egg wash by whisking the remaining egg and 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl. Use a pastry brush to paint the egg wash onto the top of each dog treat.

Place in the oven and bake about 30 minutes, until hard. Let cool completely before storing at room temperature or in the fridge in a sealed container.

Do you ever make homemade treats for your dogs? What’s a food your dog always goes crazy over? I never eat chicken without thinking about Bella.

xoxo

Gina
